Type:
Singles Category: Groundstrokes
Levels: Intermediate/adv. Time/players: 10 minutes/1-4
Description and goals:
This is a groundstroke drill with a specific focus on hitting loop groundstrokes. Loop groundstrokes are topspin shots with very high net clearance. These shots can be used to get a player out of a defensive position or force opponents to hit short, allowing a player to take control of a point. The idea is to force a short loop that players can take out of the air as they sneak up to the net and take time away from their opponents. Players can play a swing volley or traditional volley as they sneak in.
Organization:
Have players feed first ball into the middle of the court. Play out the point having players hitting loop forehands and backhands focusing on high net clearance and depth. When players are in good position, they should sneak up to the net and take the opponents' shot out of the air. Play to 11 (win by 2). Variations: Must rally two shots before point begins. With multiple players, have them rotate after 1 point.
Key points:
Height over net and depth of shot are key, but you want players being aggressive and sneaking in when the opportunity arises.
